For most B2B tech companies, growth still runs through a familiar set of channels: content marketing, LinkedIn outreach, paid advertising, SEO, webinars, and industry events. After organizing more than 20 virtual summits, webinars, and online conferences, I am convinced that one of the strongest of those channels is still underused.
Virtual summits.
Many companies still treat virtual events mainly as lead generation. In my experience, that is the least interesting part of the equation. The real value is that a summit can build relationships, strengthen brand authority, create strategic partnerships, generate content, expand a community, and open warm conversations for later business — at the same time. Very few marketing initiatives do all of that at once. That is why I think virtual summits are one of the most underrated growth channels available to B2B tech companies today.
What Is a Virtual Summit?
A virtual summit is an online industry conference. The concept is straightforward: identify a topic your audience actually cares about, invite six to ten respected experts to share what they know, build an audience around that topic, and give the content away. The framework sounds simple. Running it well does not. Speaker outreach, partnerships, promotion, audience engagement, and follow-up all decide whether the event works.
This article is not about the mechanics of running virtual events. Some of the wider thinking behind how I look at growth is already on my blog. Here I want to focus on why B2B tech leaders should treat a virtual summit as a strategic growth initiative, not as another marketing tactic.
The Greatest Benefit Starts Before the Event
Most people focus on attendees. I focus on speakers.
To get six to ten strong speakers, it is not unusual to contact more than a hundred industry experts. The rejection rate can be high, especially when participation is unpaid and attendance is free. That is exactly where one of the biggest opportunities sits.
Every outreach conversation creates a new connection. Over the years, I have seen potential speakers become partners, advisors, ambassadors, referral sources, and even clients. Even a decline still puts you in a relationship with someone who may be influential in your industry. A summit gives you a legitimate reason to reach people who would otherwise be hard to get to. For many B2B tech companies, that access alone is long-term value.
You Borrow Trust From Industry Experts
Building trust takes years. Borrowing it can happen much faster.
When respected industry leaders agree to speak at your event, they implicitly endorse your company. The effect is stronger when they share the event with their own audience. One example from our experience: a representative from Microsoft for Startups. After the announcement, both the speaker and the official Microsoft for Startups LinkedIn page helped promote the summit. The biggest value was not the reach. It was credibility.
When recognized brands publicly associate themselves with your company, market perception shifts. For a growing B2B tech company, that kind of trust is hard to build through advertising alone.
Every Summit Becomes a Content Engine
One of the hidden advantages of a virtual summit is content. Many companies treat an event as a one-off. I see it as a content production system.
A single summit can produce full-length presentations, short social videos, thought-leadership articles, LinkedIn posts, expert quotes, newsletter material, sales enablement, and industry insight. Instead of inventing content from scratch every week, the event keeps generating material that can feed marketing for months. In a content-driven market, that alone can justify the investment.
Virtual Summits Supercharge Account-Based Marketing
Virtual events sit naturally inside an account-based marketing strategy. Every registration carries useful information. Before the event starts, you can check attendees against your ideal customer profile. When a registrant matches, you have a natural opening for later engagement.
More important, the conversation is no longer fully cold. The prospect knows your brand, has shown interest in a topic close to your expertise, and has chosen to engage with your company. That is a stronger base for a later conversation than traditional cold outreach.
A Better Conversation Starter Than a Sales Pitch
One of the hardest problems in B2B marketing is finding a reason to start a conversation. Most outreach turns into a sales pitch almost immediately. A virtual summit is a better alternative. Instead of asking for a meeting, you invite someone to an educational event with industry experts. The conversation is about value, not selling.
In our experience, that lifts connection acceptance and response rates. People are far more likely to engage when you are offering knowledge rather than asking for time.
Speakers Bring More Than Expertise
They also bring audiences.
Many attendees register because they want a particular speaker, not because they know the organizer. Each speaker introduces your brand to a new network. As more experts take part, those audiences compound. Over time the company sits inside a larger ecosystem of prospects, customers, partners, and industry people. That is a growth mechanism many companies underestimate.
Strategic Partnerships Become Easier
Virtual summits are also a practical way to build partnerships. The best partners often serve the same audience and sell something complementary.
If your company targets retail organizations, the partner list might include retail technology platforms, analytics providers, industry consultants, startup accelerators, and specialized software vendors. These companies are not direct competitors, so collaboration is easier. Everyone gets access to a new audience and adds something to the community. Many of our strongest partnerships started with a summit.
Why We Continue Investing in Virtual Summits
We run webinars through the year. Webinars and virtual summits do different jobs. Webinars keep engagement going and go deep on a specific topic. Summits build an ecosystem. They attract stronger speakers, create more content, produce deeper partnerships, and strengthen brand positioning in ways few other initiatives can.
Our approach is simple: webinars through the year, and a major virtual summit about once a quarter. Together they make a steady growth engine for both audience development and business development.
The Biggest Mistake Companies Make
The biggest mistake I see is judging a virtual summit only by lead generation. Companies that do that miss most of the value.
A successful summit does not only generate leads. It creates relationships with industry experts, strategic partnerships, brand authority, community growth, warm ABM opportunities, content at scale, trust, and longer-term business. Very few growth channels deliver all of that at once.
That is why, after more than 20 virtual summits, I am convinced they remain one of the most underrated growth channels for B2B tech companies. Not because they generate leads. Because they build an ecosystem around the company — and over time that ecosystem becomes one of the most valuable assets a B2B tech business can own.
